Ranch sorting & team penning clinics,
private lessons, cow work, (trainer on site) & competitions
are held at our horse boarding, lesson, training &
show facilitylocated in beautiful Royse City, Texas,
which was officially opened in 1995 by Jim and Zee Sykes.Jim
actually started team penning in the early 1980's , just as it was
starting to be recognized as an equine sport in Texas. They
started out with a bunch of folks getting together on the
weekends doing what they loved to do: riding horses and having
fun doing it.Within a year, the informal get-togethers and
impromptu
pennings had turned into a full-time business, with
more and more people joining in each week for the fun.
Before long,
the
Bar S was hosting
team penning and
ranch sorting
practice sessions, riding lessons,
horse training, and an annual series
team penning & ranch sorting competition.Numbered classes are
offered based on riders rating. Ratings are on the
show results page. The annual cowgirl roundup has been added where the ladies compete in drawn
teams in several events for awards. Cowgirl roundup was started in 2007 &
is an annual event , no experience required. Also,
pasture penning and sorting and 1 man & 2 man
penning are offered at random times. Many
events are handicapped to give all riders a more
equal chance at winning.
Beginners are
always welcome at the Bar S whether for riding lessons,
clinics, practice, learning to work cows or looking for gentle
well mannered horses.
Private
clinics are available to groups of 5 or more on basic
horsemanship, team penning, ranch sorting.

Bar S Arena offers a wide range of western riding lessons.
Beginners and nervous riders who have had a bad
experience (and a fear of horses) are encouraged to come
down and learn the basics and gain the confidence
needed to participate in the cow events or just ride
the horse for pleasure. We have helped numerous people
overcome their fear and now they are trail riding all
the way to team penning. At the same
time, lessons are offered to more advanced riders
eager to cut seconds off their penning time. Jim &
Zee are well-equipped to help riders at any level.
